HOW QUAL8 MEASURES

We state the precision of every number. That's the house rule. Steel and your-own-target readings are reported on a coarser grid than Sigma8 readings, because they are measured with less information — and that difference is visible in every reading, not buried in a footnote.

Use Qual8 with any target you already have → paper or steel

Print it, shoot it, and Qual8 does the rest.

The Sigma8 Calibrated Targets use printed ChArUco patterns that let computer vision square your photo from any angle and accurately map every bullet hole for you. The patterns calibrate the size of each pixel in the image, so every measurement is true to scale.

If you want the highest precision, shoot Sigma8 targets. Download them for free and print at home on heavy 60lb paper for clean bullet holes.

Your own target

Shoot the targets you already print and love.

If you just love shooting your own favorite target or maybe you forgot to print out your favorite Sigma8 Calibrated targets, Qual8 was designed to work with any target you brought to the range.

Dot drills, club sheets, zero grids — tap two marks a known distance apart. Qual8 uses them to calibrate the size of each pixel in the image, then you mark each bullet hole by hand.

Round, Square, Rectangular, Silhouette, or any custom shape

The same two-mark method you’d use for your own targets, with every impact mapped by hand — don’t forget a fresh can of white spray paint so you can find your bullet impacts easier.

A Sigma8 target is the most accurate way to measure a group in Qual8, because it is the only one that brings its own scale and its own geometry. The other two are exactly as accurate as the reference you measured and the marks you tapped.

Every measurement displays to two decimals. Steel and own-target readings land on the nearest 0.05" — Qual8 never shows finer than the instrument can resolve.

Load development separates loads by hundredths of an inch. You can run it on any of the three, and the Sigma8 target is the one that resolves differences that small — which is also why the Load Qualified badge is earned on Sigma8 paper.
